I enjoyed the challenge of this piece. I thought it would be fairly straight forward but once I got started I realised that a degree of planning was required to achieve the gradation of the tones. I used threads of various thicknesses to achieve the effect required.

I drew out a number of blackwork stitches on graph paper to get some ideas about how the variation in tone might work out.

I did a small piece of plain blackwork to gauge the size of thread and linen required.

Blackwork Tonal Columns using pattern development, spacing of the stitches and thickness of thread respectively to achieve the tonal variations.
