Module 1 – Chapter 4

I have again used a basic star design, this time a 6 pointed star.

I have just noticed that when these pages were scanned the points of some of the stars on the right hand side of the pages have been cut off. I can assure you they are all there on the original pages!
 .

I think you can see where the paper was folded in these examples - I folded it unevenly
and off centre which resulted in these shapes.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT BASED ON THE STAR

DESIGN SHEET A

I found this chapter really interesting, and sometimes challenging, especially doing the distortion and perspective distortion, but I was quite happy with the results. I am not sure if it’s clear from the scan, but I rubbed a gold shiva paintstik over some of the shapes because I thought the plain paper could do with a bit of interest. Some of the others I outlined with a gold pen or put gold dots around some edges.

I particularly enjoyed Design Sheet C because of the opportunity to create some interesting repeat patterns with the same basic shape.

MAKING COLOURED PAPERS

I used 110gsm cartridge paper, crumpled brown paper and newspaper (Indonesian language paper as it happens) for the coloured papers. As I mentioned in my email I was a bit disappointed with the fact that the paper was a bit uneven from the ink and I have noted your response about how to deal with that in the future. I don’t mind the effect in some ways, but I just found it made it more difficult to get the cut out pieces to sit neatly. However, after I had stuck them to the pages I put a large heavy book on top and that has helped.

I didn’t have any large quantities of inks, only tiny bottles, and there were none available in my home town, so when I went to the larger city a couple of hours away I was able to get one bottle of red and one of green. (It was lucky those were the colours I had chosen because they were the only bottles they had in stock!). The red said it was scarlet but it was a bit lighter than I had expected. However, I added some other reds and greens from my tiny bottles to add some highlights.

PRINTING ONTO COLOURED PAPERS

I chose a quarter of my star shape and printed with red acrylic ink on to some of the coloured papers.  I enjoyed experimenting with placement of the stamp to create new designs.

Module 1 – Chapter 1

MODULE 1 - CHAPTER 1

I decided to use a star shape for the first four chapters of this module. As I started it in the couple of weeks before Christmas there seemed to be a lot of stars everywhere, but it did make me aware of how often stars are used in advertising and general decoration.
I have used an A4 Art Diary to paste all my pieces into as I have a scanner that takes A4.

And I have used a numbering system for my pages which is, e.g.

1.2.1.  which is Module 1, Chapter 2, page 1.

I hope that is ok, but it seemed to me an easy way to make sure I was able to find things later.

RESEARCH

Sorry, but I can’t seem to get this to sit straight on the page, which may be due to my not having it straight when it was scanned. I am still getting used to doing this uploading to a blog! I can redo it if you wish.

COLOUR CIRCLE

When I wanted to do this colour circle I didn’t have any gouache water colour paints so I did  a colour wheel with acrylic paints. However, the end result was a bit uneven, so I repeated it when I had been able to get some gouache paints and I was much happier with the result. Although I have seen many colour wheels over the years I have never done one myself, and I found it very interesting to actually make the colours. It certainly made me much more aware of how colours are created and the difference a small change in the colour contents can make.
