Module One – Chapter 6

USE OF BONDING (TRANSFER ADHESIVE) IN APPLIQUE
img053
Both these samples use designs from Chapter 4.
The top sample has a green Bali cotton quilting fabric as the background with the printed red slightly corded fabric over that on each edge. Then I added the plain red fabric stars in the middle. I used Bondaweb to bond the layers.
The second sample has an almost damask-like red fabric as the background with the green star cut out of the same Bali cotton fabric.  The star was cut in half vertically and bonded to the outer edges. Three small stars with diamond cut-outs in the middle were cut from a slightly silky crinkle fabric which I had printed. It is a fairly “busy’ design when done in these fabrics, but it gives a different look when compared with the paper version (Page 1.4.6).

I took photos as I made the fabric with the fragments. The top one shows the items laid out on the pale green fabric. The second shows it after the pale green transparent fabric was bonded over the top.

I then did the same with the second piece which was fragments bonded between 2 layers of red organza type fabric.

This sample is pieces cut from the green bonded fabric, which were then bonded to the red background which has a slight sheen to it.  If I was going to do anything further with this piece, I would have to do some stitching near the edges of the bonded fabric as the edges lift up a bit.  But I was pleased with this sample because the contrast between the background and bonded fabrics is quite distinct and the overall effect is effective.

I decided to use the left over pieces from the sample above, so it ended up a little larger in order to accommodate all the pieces. Because it is a little wide the scan seems to have taken some of the colour out of the plain red cotton fabric at the bottom of the picture.

This sample has calico as a backing because the bonded fabric just didn’t seem to show well enough against a green or red fabric. I was less happy with this bonded fabric because it turned out to be shiny and almost rubbery looking. It may have been better to have the red at the back and a transparent fabric over the top.

img051
For this sample I crumpled red tissue which already had a small pale pattern on it. I cut the tissue out into the three layers and then stuck them on to a piece of the red bonded fabric, which I then trimmed around the outside edge of the star. It was a bit more difficult to manage the tissue because it was thin and also cut quite narrowly. The star is bonded to a piece of calico, again to give a contrast to the background.

img052
For this sample I cut out a star in the crumpled red tissue and cut diamond shape holes out on the centre lines. Then I laid some red threads of various types under the diamond shape holes and ironed a piece of bonded organdie fabric over the top. The background is a piece of patterned green fabric.

img054
For this sample I used the left over strip of the green bonded fabric and crumpled tissue paper for the stars. The tissue was a bit difficult to stick down neatly on to the backing fabric.

I am thinking of using the design below for the layered design and later chapters, which is the design I referred to in my email. I think it would work ok – if I can sort out where to sew and where to cut! I am looking at Chapter 7 now, and where to sew and where to cut seem to me to be the big issues for consideration. I have some samples ready to tack and  then sew, so I will see how I get on.
